Concrete, Petals, and Sound: Inside the World of A Violet In Youth Contributed to SPIN by Malana VanTyler

ABOUT

A VIOLET IN YOUTH welds together guitar-driven odysseys that are peripatetic yet purposeful, esoteric but not inscrutable experiments indebted as much to jazz theory as they are to pop formulas. One Direction meets Chopin; Fleetwood Mac meets Nine Inch Nails. To Altadena native, Daniella Lollie, all music is weighted equally in possible influence: “You're supposed to listen to everything separately at the same time.” Recorded and performed along with keyboardist Lisa Yan, drummer Amanda Erwin, and bassist Kelly Kuhn, the resulting songs on A VIOLET IN YOUTH’s first two EPs satisfy Lollie’s own idiosyncratic listening proclivities while defining her creative thesis: “It has to be dissonant but still beautiful.”
